That's very likely. If you assign an IP address that the router gave to the printer, then you by definition gave the printer an IP address inside the DHCP range. Since the printer then stops requesting IPs when you set a static IP, some (shittier) routers will then go ahead and reassign that IP to a new device once the lease expires.
